Wirra Wirra Catapult Shiraz

Wirra Wirra Catapult Shiraz is a red wine produced by the renowned Australian winery Wirra Wirra from the McLaren Vale region. The wine is named after a historic slingshot once built by the winery's founder, Greg Trott, as a playful reference to the winery's tradition of bell-ringing.

The Catapult Shiraz is a single-varietal wine, which means that it is made exclusively from the Shiraz grape, also known as Syrah. This grape is known for its rich and full-bodied character, with luscious dark fruit flavors such as blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, accompanied by subtle spicy notes and a hint of black pepper.

When tasting Wirra Wirra Catapult Shiraz, the wine reveals a full body with soft tannins and a lively acidity that provides a well-balanced structure. It has an inviting finish that lasts long and emphasizes the rich character of the Shiraz grape.

The grapes come from different vineyard plots. These are vinified separately and aged for 16-18 months before assembly. This usually consists of 50-60% wines aged in French oak barriques and 50-40% in American oak barriques. 15-20% of the barrels are new.

Wine - Food pairing

This Shiraz is an excellent accompaniment to hearty meat dishes, such as grilled ribeye steak, rack of lamb or game dishes. It also goes well with rich pasta dishes with a spicy tomato sauce.

Wirra Wirra Vineyards

The Aboriginal name 'Wirra Wirra' means 'among the gum trees'. Founder Bob Wigley's wines, especially from the Syrah grape, were very popular in London. The wines have been exported around the world for over 100 years. In 1936 most of the vineyards were sold by the family and the wine cellars fell into disuse. In 1969, Greg and Roger Trott bought the dilapidated winery and some surrounding land. The two first cousins brought their own vineyards into the new company and started making wine, aided by the local wine producers.

McLaren Vale is located in the state of South Australia, a 45-minute drive from the capital Adelaide. It is famous as a culinary paradise full of tasty culinary specialties and great wines. The Mediterranean climate is tempered by the proximity of the Saint Vincent gulf. The summers are warm and the winters are moderate. Precipitation (580-700 mm per year) mainly falls in winter. During the warm season, humidity is low and evaporation is high. Little or no chance of frost during the growing period or rain during harvest. Depending on the type of soil and location, we work without irrigation or with drip irrigation. Wirra Wirra Winery has its own dam and water recycling installation. The vineyards work biodynamically.
