Founded in 1991, Richmond Plains is a very small family business. Based near Nelson on the top of New Zealand's South Island. Richmond Plains is a pioneer of organic wine, growing New Zealand's first certified organic sauvignon blanc and pinot noir. All grapes are now biodynamically grown with intensive manual techniques to take the best possible care of the vines.
Richmond Plains believes in making great wines by working with nature in the vineyards. By using biodynamic methods, they can really express the character of the terroir in the wines. They nourish the soil and vines with organic brews and compost teas. Diseases are controlled with natural beneficial organisms such as Trichoderma and Bacillus Subtilus that counteract unwanted organisms. This lush green vineyard creates an attractive habitat for a variety of native birds, lizards, butterflies and beneficial insects.
The Koru logo on the label comes from New Zealand Maori mythology and symbolizes new beginnings, thriving life and growth. Just as each season breathes new life into the vineyard and makes new wines; in this way the flavors of previous vintages develop and unfold gently as they ripen. The wines are an example of mastery and offer finesse over power. Superb reviews are the result.
