Grans-Fassian is a family-owned winery located in the Mosel wine region of Germany. The winery was founded in 1624 and has been in the family for over 350 years. Today, the estate is run by Gerhard Grans and his son Philipp, who represent the eighth and ninth generations of winemakers in the family.
Grans-Fassian cultivates 17 hectares of vineyards on steep, south-facing slopes along the Mosel River. The vineyards are planted with Riesling, the region's most important grape variety, as well as some Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir. The estate's vineyards are planted on weathered Devonian slate soils, which lend minerality and complexity to the wines.
The winery produces a range of wines, from dry to sweet, that are known for their purity, elegance, and balance. The estate's dry Rieslings are particularly noteworthy, with intense aromas of citrus, stone fruit, and minerals, as well as lively acidity and a long, persistent finish. Grans-Fassian also produces several sweet wines, including Auslese and Beerenauslese, which are made from late-harvested grapes that are affected by noble rot, or Botrytis cinerea. These wines are rich and complex, with flavors of honey, dried fruit, and spice.
Grans-Fassian is committed to sustainable vineyard practices, and the estate has been certified organic since 2012. The winery also uses natural yeasts for fermentation and avoids the use of fining agents to preserve the natural character of the wines.
