Coteaux du Layon

Coteaux du Layon

Coteaux du Layon is a wine appellation located in the Pays de la Loire region, in the Maine-et-Loire department, France. It is known for the production of sweet white wines, especially the noble sweet wines, which are made from the Chenin Blanc grape. The vineyards of Coteaux du Layon are located on the hills along the River Layon.

The most praised wines from Coteaux du Layon are the noble sweet wines, where the grapes are affected by noble rot, also known as botrytis. This fungus causes the grapes to dry out, resulting in concentrated and sweet wines. The wines often have complex flavors of honey, dried fruit, apricots and citrus, paired with fresh acidity.

Best known for its dessert wines, Coteaux du Layon is considered one of the best producers of noble sweet wines in the Loire Valley. The appellation has several classifications, including Coteaux du Layon AOC and Coteaux du Layon Premier Cru Chaume AOC.

These sweet wines are popular as an aperitif or as an accompaniment to desserts and cheeses. Coteaux du Layon illustrates the art of working with natural conditions to produce high quality wines with a unique character.
