Austrian Zweigelt

Austrian Zweigelt wines

Zweigelt is a red wine grape variety that is widely grown in Austria. It was created in the 1920s by Dr. Fritz Zweigelt, who crossed two other grape varieties, St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch. Today, Zweigelt is the most widely planted red grape variety in Austria, and is known for producing wines that are medium-bodied with soft tannins and bright acidity.

Zweigelt wines typically have aromas and flavors of red and black fruit, such as cherry and blackberry, as well as notes of spice, herbs, and earth. They are often enjoyed young, although some high-quality examples can age well for several years.

Zweigelt is often blended with other red grape varieties in Austria, such as Blaufränkisch and Pinot Noir.
