Port

Port wine

Port is a fortified wine from the Douro Valley in northern Portugal. It is known as one of the most iconic wines in the world and is often associated with Portugal. Port is a protected geographical indication and may only be produced in the designated wine regions of the Douro Valley.

What makes Port so special is the fortification process used during wine production. After the grapes are pressed, they are made into wine, as with any other type of wine. However, before the wine is fully fermented, a strong, neutral alcohol (called aguardente) is added to stop the fermentation process. This results in a wine with a higher alcohol content and a relatively sweet taste.

Port wine is made from several red grape varieties, including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca. There are several styles of port wine, including:

Vintage Port: This is the most prestigious and expensive style of Port wine. It is made from one vintage and aged in oak barrels for two to three years before being bottled, where it will continue to mature for many years. Vintage Port is known for its deep, rich flavor with notes of dark fruit, spices and chocolate.

Tawny Port: This is a Port that has been aged in oak barrels for several years, giving it a smooth, nutty taste with notes of caramel and toffee. Tawny Ports can be aged for up to 40 years, with the age indicated on the label.

Ruby Port: This is a Port that has been aged in oak barrels for a shorter period of time, giving it a bright, fruity taste with notes of red berries and cherries.

Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) Port: This is a Port that is made from a single vintage and aged in oak barrels for four to six years before being bottled. LBV Ports are known for their intense flavor and soft, velvety texture.

Port is often enjoyed as a dessert wine, but can also be used in cocktails or with the cheese platter. The variety of styles and flavors makes Port a versatile wine suitable for different occasions. It is a valuable part of Portuguese culture and a beloved wine all over the world.
