Vintage Port is one of the most prestigious and appreciated styles of Port wine. It is a type of port that is only produced in exceptional vintages, when the grapes are of exceptional quality. Vintage Ports are regarded as some of the best and most sought after Port wines in the world due to their excellence, complexity and potential for extended aging.
The production of Vintage Port is strictly regulated and governed by the laws of Portugal's Douro region, where Port wine is produced. The winery must announce the grape harvest to the wine authorities and they decide whether the vintage is recognized as "vintage". Usually a Vintage Port is only released about three times a decade.
What sets Vintage Port apart from other port styles is the fact that it is bottled without much aging in casks. After a relatively short period of aging in oak barrels (about two years), the wine is bottled, aging further in the bottle. This allows the wine to develop and improve over many years, sometimes even several decades.
In their youth, Vintage Ports usually have intense aromas of ripe black fruits, such as berries and plums, combined with spicy and floral notes. As they mature, they develop complex layers of flavours, such as chocolate, dried fruit, nuts and tobacco.
Because of their quality and long shelf life, Vintage Ports are often regarded as investment wines and collectibles. They are ideal for special occasions, such as anniversaries, birthdays and other milestones, and can be enjoyed after a long period of aging, revealing their full potential.
Vintage Port is usually served after a meal as an elegant digestif, but can also go well with spicy cheeses, dark chocolate or a rich chocolate dessert. It is a wine that attracts port lovers and connoisseurs of fine wines for its exceptional quality and unique character.
