Abbazia di Novacella

Abbazia di Novacella, also known as Kloster Neustift in German, is a centuries-old monastery and renowned winery located in South Tyrol, Italy. Founded in 1142, the monastery has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages and is an important cultural and religious monument in the region.

For more than 850 years, Abbazia di Novacella has combined traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques to produce excellent wines that reflect the unique terroir of South Tyrol. The winery is best known for its white wines, particularly the Sylvaner and Gewürztraminer, which have received international recognition for their quality and character.

The vineyards of Abbazia di Novacella are located on steep slopes of the Alps, at altitudes ranging from 600 to 900 meters above sea level. This unique terroir, characterized by cool temperatures and calcareous soils, creates ideal conditions for the cultivation of grapes of exceptional quality.

The Praepositus wines are a tribute to the clergy who lived in the Monastery of Novacella. The wines are made from grapes from the best plots of the house, usually higher, with an optimal position in relation to the sun and a very mineral-rich soil. In the cellar, these wines undergo longer maturation on the lees, often partly in wood. The wines are more complex and refined than the wines from the Classic series.

The Kerner is the calling card of the house. The grapes grow in vineyards at an altitude of about 650 to 750 meters. The south to south-westerly location ensures that the grapes get enough sun and warmth to ripen, while cool nights retain the freshness in the wine. The mineral-rich, water-permeable soil consists of mica slate, paragneiss and quartz.
