Mehofer Eiswein is a special and precious wine from the winery Mehofer in Austria. "Eiswein" is a German term that literally means "ice wine". This wine is produced from grapes that have been frozen on the vine before being harvested. The temperature should then not exceed -7 °C.
The grapes are picked by hand at night or early in the morning, when temperatures are below freezing. Because the grapes freeze, the water in the grapes is frozen, while the sugars and other flavors remain concentrated.
Pressing the frozen grapes is a delicate and time consuming task as the frozen grapes produce little juice. What remains is a highly concentrated and intensely sweet juice, resulting in a wine of remarkable sweetness and complexity.
This Eiswein has intense aromas of ripe apple, exotic banana and honeydew melon, combined with hints of vanilla and orange peel. On the palate it has a perfect combination of charming sweetness, refreshing acidity and decent spiciness.
