The grape cloned by Dr. Fritz Zweigelt in 1922 is a crossing of Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent. They were mainly looking for a grape that would be more resistant to diseases and would also give more juice. Thus the success story of this quality red wine from Austria with considerable depth, lots of black juice and a powerful aftertaste.
