Clos René is one of the oldest Châteaux in Pomerol, dating back to the 18th century. At the time, the château was known as “Reney.” In 1940, Clos René was owned by Pierre Lasserre, who also included Château l'Eglise Clinet. Today Clos René is still owned by the Lasserre family, but the Garde family is co-owner.
The vineyards are located in the far west of Pomerol, south of Lalande de Pomerol and close to Château l'Enclos and Château de Sales. The 12 hectares of vineyards are largely (70%) planted with Merlot. In addition, Cabernet Franc (20%) and Malbec (10%) are also planted. The 1.2 hectares of Malbec mean that Clos René has the largest plantation at Malbec in Pomerol. The subsoil consists mainly of sand and pebbles, in addition, the soil contains a high iron content. The planting density is 5,500 vines per hectare and the vines have an average age of 35 years.
