Château Taillefer

Château Taillefer was purchased in 1923 by the Frenchman Antoine Moueix. He saw potential in the winery, which he knew through and through because of his profession as a négociant. Surrounded by 12 hectares of vineyards, the château is situated south of the Pomerol plateau. Here, in the south Pomerol, the soil contains highly ferrous substrata. This strongly ferrous soil, 'crasse de fer', gives the wines from this part of Pomerol a unique character. The name Taillefer is probably a reference to these strongly ferrous underlayers in the soil ('fer' is iron).

Since 1996, Catherine Moueix and her children Antoine and Claire have been in charge of the Château on a daily basis. In addition to Château Taillefer, the Moueix family also owns a château in Saint-Émilion, called Tauzinat l'Hermitage. In recent years, substantial investments have been made in both Châteaux to strengthen the quality, image and name recognition. The wine cellars of both Châteaux have been completely renovated and the vineyards are worked with respect for the environment.
