Château Cantemerle

Château Cantemerle is a Bordeaux of the more classic kind. The blend consists of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot grapes. Responsible for the vinification process is oenologist Eric Boissenot. The grapes are picked by hand and carefully sorted. The fermentation then takes place in wooden barrels, stainless steel and in concrete Cuveés. The latter are being used more and more because they allow better regulation of the temperature during fermentation.

Finally, the wine matures for twelve months in French oak barrels, 40% of which are new barrels. Château Cantemerle is a rich and graceful wine with attractive aromas of wood smoke, cedar, cassis and violet. In the mouth fine tannins, fruit and power with the phenomenal final lingering for a long time.

Château Cantemerle

Château Cantemerle, 5th Grand Cru Classé, is located between the municipalities of Macau and Ludon. Château Cantemerle was added to the famous 1855 classification in 1856, making it one of the very rare changes. The only other change so far is the promotion of Château Mouton-Rothschild – Pauillac from 2nd Grand Cru Classé to 1st Grand Cru Classé in 1973.

From 1576 to 1892 the domain was owned by the Villeneuve family and from 1892 to 1980 by the Dubos family until it was bought in 1981 by SMA a large insurance company. The facilities were completely renovated and vineyards were replanted. The total area of the vineyards is currently 93 ha with plantations of Cabernet Sauvignon (64%), Merlot (27%), Cabernet Franc (5%) and Petit Verdot (4%). The average age of the vines is 35 years. In total, 600,000 bottles are produced, with 70% of the harvest being used for the first wine “Château Cantemerle” and 30% being used for the second wine “Les Allées de Cantemerle.”
